AT A GLANCE

  • Join us every Friday as we countdown this weeks hottest new tracks from the Australian scene.

kobie dee - '“role models”

First off this week we have well known Sydney rapper Kobie Dee and his new single “Role Models”. His mental imagery and storytelling ability is littered throughout the verses through a versatile everchanging cadence. The song takes a look at his personal life and struggles witnessed while simultaneously addressing the cause and effect it has on past, and future generations of youth. Kobie Dee usually incorporates a message in his music with the main theme of this track being the lack of role models for disadvantaged youth in particular city areas. Deep and thought provoking lyrics force the viewer to think and hopefully understand his message. From a strictly lyrical perspective, his story telling ability is hard to find in the Australian scene, let alone at all in modern rap and hip hop. With more emphasis on storytelling and his message as opposed to complex lyrical schemes and punchlines. Kobie Dee is quickly gaining a large following, likely due to his impressive storytelling and his unique ability to capture the listeners attention.

nme - “presto”

With previous tracks “German” and “Sauve” pulling numbers on YouTube, NME returns and gains the fourth spot on this week's list with their new uptempo single “Presto”. @SkwattaBoy lays down some Latin sounding horns and some simple yet bouncy drums giving the track it’s uptempo vibe. The group takes turns hopping on beat with Tommy Ot and RB going back to back for the tracks hook. The song is littered with wordplay and various one liners with the pace of the track being credited to the booming 808’s and kick pattern. The music video features an insane increase in production value in comparison to the groups previous releases. The video follows the story of the group and their various racquets all grouping up at the end to gather and collect the various profits. Featuring cars, fights and a vastly greater production value the song sounds like something that might come out of a Fast and Furious film.

rops1 - “hustle”

Campbelltown rapper ROPS1 is back again with his latest single “Hustle”. Following his usual song structure, his skippy rhythms and intense delivery give the track it’s fast paced feel. The song has an overall club or afro swing vibe with an underground twist delivered through ROPS gutter rapping style. The song and beat structure is fairly simple and is driven by some xylophone sounding keys and the simplistic drum patterns. The songs main drive is due to his lyrical content and cadence working together to deliver a rhythmical structure throughout the record. A simple 4 bar chorus sets the tone at the very beginning of the track and is reinforced by the overall subject matter and bars such as “Shotties coming cheap, we don’t do glock 9’s with lasers” and “king of gutter rap, and that’s a fact, they know I fuck it up”. It is clear ROPS1 is still keeping his workflow consistent only dropping his last single and music video featuring Crazy Cam from OTG for their single “NO PRESSURE” a month ago. ROPS has defined a new wave of Australian gutter rap and broken through barriers in his career so far, we can only hope he continues this work in the future.

nokz78 - “Ftb (freeverse)”

Only a week after releasing “24”, Nokz78 is back with another single titled “FTB (Freeverse)” A deeper and more interpersonal release then we’ve gotten used to, Nokz spits his flow over a key-heavy lo-fi sounding production from @TheMattNoble, stating on his Instagram that the track meant more to him than usual. Giving us an insight to his drive, personality and life story throughout the two minute track. Detailing the struggles of his past and the light he found through music, also giving the listener a greater idea of his motives. Overall the track has a classy, old school feel and Nokz aces his delivery making it one of his best releases to date.

It is evident that Nokz has found his niche with flawless delivery and punchlines, the relatively new rapper is rising quickly and finding his foothold within our scene. As of writing, Nokz also jumped on a remix to Lawd Lance’s “Around Here” with TH4 W3ST. The track adds even more heat to the already hot record with each rapper spitting in a verse to verse pattern adding their own elements and flavour to Lawd Lance’s single. Nokz has the first verse for the remix and brings his signature setup and punchline style heavily utilitising rhetorical questions throughout the verse. Nokz has a huge potential and continues to prove his capability every release so far, hopefully he can continue to improve and succeed for time to come.

huskii - “blood brothers pt. II”

Following the release of “Intro”, Huskii returns with Skemron and Tryl for the second part of the two part record “Blood Brothers”. 2k2 brings a melancholic piano that drives the melody while a grunge sounding electric guitar can be heard in the background throughout, adding a raw element to the record and a secondary melody to add further listening interest. The record as a whole is produced incredibly well, the mixing and beat production is on point with an even soundscape and overall incredible mood to the track. SKEM uses the first verse to reflect and get personal with the listener whilst weaving through effortless punchlines with his fluid cadence. Huskii then jumps in for the chorus, building up in intensity before the beat simplifies and the tension is released right as the chorus comes back for the second time. Revisiting the “SadBoy” style lyrics that helped him become the name he is today, Huskii fails to miss with his verses which couldn’t be more true for this track. His verse reminds the listener of previous earlier soundcloud releases, the deep and interpersonal lyrics that Huskii is known for returns along with the confident and sometimes aggressive delivery that he is known for. Tryl returns for the second part of “Blood Brothers” and brings the same signature voice and style to the track, adding to the records notoriety as he featured on the first part of the record.

It is clear Huskii is continuing to grind, even whilst battling with the legal system and personal demons, Huskii is a name that has helped breathe the breath of fresh air that exploded the then new wave underground australian rap scene back into the mainstream. “Blood Brothers pt. II” is an excellent addition to his slowly growing discography that continues to blow away all expectations.
