AT A GLANCE

  • Join us every Friday as we countdown this weeks hottest new tracks from the Australian scene.

hooks - “no treason”

Starting our list this Friday is Hooks with his new single “No Treason”. Coming with his signature flow and delivery Hooks rides the bassline heavy beat bringing more drill style bars and one liners. A unique vocal chop sample can be heard throughout the track adding extra depth, alongside with various ad-libs and heavy reverb on Hook’s bars the song has a very subtle but aggressive feeling. The music video, shot by Kreezy Visions and Sueno Productions features an all white Bentley Bentayga cruising through city tunnels with Hooks occasionally performing sections of the chorus and verses in static locations. The song is filled with bars mostly referring to street life and gang culture. The first solo song Hooks has dropped in a short while with most of fans waiting for the unreleased but heavily teased track titled “Hammers” - Featuring Hooligan Hefs, “No Treason” comes as a dope track but falls short when compared with his other tracks. Do you think Hooks need to add more to his music to stand out?

wombat - “blue lights remix”

The second track on our list this week comes from grime scene legend Wombat with his new remix to Jorja Smith’s “Blue Lights”. The music production samples the original keys and bells adding in fast paced high-hat heavy drums backing up Wombats insane flows and delivery pair alongside his unique subject matter to create a melancholic vibe that feels nostalgic to the listener. Wombat’s chorus focuses on mental illness and his viewpoint on the matter. This song is layered with multiple heart crushing lines and meaningful bars. Jorja Smith blesses the remix with the original vocals coming in with some old school vinyl scratching that ends off the track with a breath of fresh air.

big tiny - “on my own”

Taking a short break from our list we take a look at our up and coming artist this week, Big Tiny, with his new single “On My Own”. Big Tiny brings back his skippy rhythms and fast paced delivery over a slow vocal sample, taking a short break to introduce his singing voice for the first time. Adding an extra melody for the hook breaks up the song nicely and sounds really good in between the reminiscent and interpersonal lyrics. With previous tracks “Brothers Keeper” and “Raw” following the same reflective style. It is clear that Big Tiny has an appetite for success and the work rate to match it will be interesting to see what he brings for the rest of the year.

spanian - “illchay”

Relax lad, Spanian makes third place this week with his new single “IllChay”. Spanian brings a slower, bouncier lyrical delivery than usual. The Sydney rapper uses piglatin throughout the whole song with repetition of the word “IllChay” or “Chill” in the hook. The beat features a booming 808 kick and a distorted piano sample. Spanian brings his A game on this track that is soaked with his personality, intermittently changing flows and a rich vocal tone to add extra depth and interest to the song. The video features cultural icon Anthony Mundine and shows numerous scenes of Spanian and his boys on the block getting hype. This track comes a month after Spanian dropped the drill anthem “Back It Up” adding more versatility to his constantly expanding discography.

pistol pete & Enzo - doin der’

The second track of this week's list goes to Pistol Pete & Enzo with the new single “Doin Der”, the duo comes with a high production value movie style music video. The video, produced by Sammy heat and Lowkee, Director Herbert Leota shows Pete and Enzo running down opps and handing out beatings. A heavy hitting 808 bassline alongside the unique sample and fast, aggressive lyrics from the duo carries throughout the whole song, only breaking the pace occasionally for one liners or music video cuts. Themes of Australian culture appear heavily throughout the video and song, incorporating pig-latin in multiple bars and the hook. Recently it feels like Pistol Pete & Enzo are constantly improving production value in both their music and their videos. Hopefully the rest of the game will take note and we see more videos like this released from other artists.

chillinit x lisi - “stand for”

Topping off our list this week we have Chillinit featuring Lisi with their new single “Stand For”. The hyped up track from Chill featuring Lisi is packed with wordplay and creative bars from both artists. Chill brings his signature bar-filling lyrics and delivery over a holy sounding vocal sample. The track does not include a hook rather it utilizes a back to back style with Chill and Lisi going back to back for the last verse of the track. Filmed by Jaen Collective the video features both the artist's hometowns, Hurstville and Goodna with lighting by Maxed Out Films adding extra flare to the scenes. As of writing, the music video has reached 16K views in less than an hour of being released, showing the monumental hype behind this track. Both Lisi and Chill have similar technical styles and the same energetic delivery that bounce of each other so well, hopefully we hear more from Chill and Lisi in the future.
