Perth's VAH Raises the Bar With "Big Back," His Most Complete Release Yet

VAH's latest single arrives as both a statement of intent and a measure of how far the Perth rapper has come in a short stretch of time.

"Big Back" is VAH's most complete release to date. The track pairs soul and disco influenced production with confident, rhythmically assured rapping, and arrives alongside a music video that elevates the package further. For an artist who has been building steadily, this is the release that makes the progression impossible to dismiss.

Growth You Can Actually Hear

The beat opens like a television sitcom theme. Warm strings and a familiar sense of nostalgia set the tone before it drops into something with considerably more energy. The transition works because it creates contrast. Where the intro builds anticipation, the main body of the track lets a funk guitar take the lead, with a vocal sample adding weight and texture to an already bouncy groove.

The drums carry the track. Jerky, booming, and full in the low end, they are responsible for the record's defining momentum. The sample never overwhelms the arrangement. Instead, it provides the foundation. The vocal chop at the centre of the hook is the kind of detail that makes a production feel crafted rather than thrown together. The beat stays clean throughout, which is a strength in itself.

VAH Finds New Confidence In His Writing

VAH enters his first verse immediately. No extended intro, no scene setting preamble. He draws comparisons and separates himself from the competition without overplaying the point. The writing is catchy and sits naturally within the bounce of the instrumental, but there is more going on beneath the surface. Elements of storytelling, controlled flexing, and subtle technical choices point to an artist thinking beyond straightforward punchlines.

The first verse closes with a slight variation on its final line before transitioning into the hook. That hook is restrained in exactly the right way. VAH keeps his own contribution simple, allowing the vocal sample to carry much of the load. The result is a hook that feels like the entire track was built around it.

The second verse follows the same energy as the first but shifts in register. More assertive. More direct. It adds another layer without disrupting the momentum. The differentiation between the two verses is a small detail that makes a noticeable difference.

VAH Is Starting To Separate Himself

The music video is the clearest marker of where VAH is currently at. Over the past year, the quality and direction of his visuals have continued to improve, and "Big Back" sits at the top of that progression. The video is not trying to reinvent the format, but it does not need to. What it demonstrates is control over image, tone, and pacing.

The inclusion of a comedic skit interlude is the detail that stands out most. It signals an artist who is as invested in the creative direction of his visuals as he is in the performance itself. That level of involvement is uncommon at this stage of a career, and it is the kind of thing that separates artists from the pack.

The Next Step In VAH’s Evolution

"Big Back" arrives at a moment when the Australian hip hop conversation is broadening in a meaningful way. Cities and scenes that have historically operated on the edge of the national conversation are becoming harder to ignore, and Perth is among them. VAH is part of a generation of Western Australian artists making it clear that the city's contribution to the local scene is neither incidental nor temporary.

The track works as a calling card for an artist on a run. Across every element, production, writing, performance, and visual execution, the quality level has taken another step forward. For a scene that is expanding its geography, releases like this matter not just for what they represent locally, but for what they say about the broader shape of Australian rap.

VAH is worth watching. What the rest of the year holds is an open question, but the current trajectory is difficult to ignore. If "Big Back" is any indication, there is still another level to come.
