crofty & choppaz rightz Deliver a Cohesive Statement on “Cheech & Chong”

Crofty and Choppaz Rightz have released their four track collaborative EP Cheech & Chong, a project rooted in boom bap production, technical lyricism, and a deliberate nod to classic hip hop collaboration. Rather than functioning as a loose pairing of solo records, the EP leans heavily on structure, sequencing, and interplay, positioning itself as a unified body of work.

The release features appearances from Manic and Quaid Pearce, with The Chemist serving as the promotional single. The track arrived two weeks ahead of the full project, accompanied by a music video that set the tone for what followed.

A Collaboration Built on Precision, Not Hype

The EP opens with “Cracked”, a measured but assertive introduction built on atmospheric production. Soft piano keys and plucked guitar lines sit over a booming 808 bassline, giving the track space to breathe while supporting a punchy, grime influenced delivery. Manic enters immediately after the first hook, sustaining momentum before Quaid Pearce carries the energy forward.

choppaz rightz closes the track, a structural decision that signals the collaborative intent of the project early. Rather than competing for dominance, each voice is positioned deliberately, reinforcing the EP’s focus on balance and cohesion.

Rick Grimes shifts the EP into colder territory. Heavy boom bap production underpins crofty’s technical wordplay, with tension building steadily through his verse before choppaz rightz enters, anchoring the track with a Rick Grimes reference that functions as both bridge and identifier.

The two trade bars in a call and response structure, a format that has become increasingly rare in contemporary rap. When executed with precision, however, it remains effective, and here it reinforces the sense of dialogue rather than parallel solo performances.

WWIII darkens the palette further. A chopped female vocal sample forms the melodic backbone, evoking mid 2010s underground hip hop influences and drawing parallels to the aesthetic territory explored by artists like A$AP Rocky, Tyler, The Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt.

choppaz rightz opens with politically charged bars, setting the thematic weight before the track settles into its familiar back and forth structure. The commentary remains measured, offering perspective on global instability without leaning into overt messaging or forced conclusions.

“The Chemist” as the EP’s Creative Anchor

Closing track The Chemist anchors the EP both sonically and conceptually. Built around piano, strings, and atmospheric textures reminiscent of early Kendrick Lamar production, the track feels polished without losing its underground edge.

crofty opens with his signature start stop grime cadence, delivering reflective bars that transition seamlessly into a melodic, infectious hook. choppaz rightz complements the tone with a technically sharp verse, closing the project with cultural and lyrical references that feel intentional rather than ornamental.

As both a standalone single and a concluding statement, The Chemist succeeds on multiple levels. It’s cohesive, restrained, and confident in its execution.

Why Cohesion Still Feels Rare in Collaborative Rap Projects

Collaborative projects often struggle to achieve true cohesion. Features are common, but fully realised joint releases, where structure, tone, and creative direction are genuinely shared, remain relatively uncommon.

Cheech & Chong demonstrates the payoff of taking collaboration seriously. From sequencing to feature placement, the EP reads as a unified statement rather than a collection of loosely connected tracks. Even the Cheech and Chong reference operates subtly, informing the creative direction without overwhelming it.

A full album review will follow in the coming week, offering deeper analysis of the production choices, lyrical themes, and references embedded throughout the project. For now, Cheech & Chong stands as a clear statement of intent from two artists operating firmly within the technical end of hip hop.

It’s a project that rewards close listening and reinforces the idea that collaboration, when executed with discipline and purpose, remains one of the genre’s most effective tools.
